![]() The song “La tierra del olvido” is a song that shows different regions around the world. ![]() They represent different regions and musical rhythms of the country. In third grade, students learned about some different singers and musicians from Colombia such us Carlos Vives, Fonseca, Fanny Lu, and ChocQuibTown, among others. The children have learned that Machu Picchu, located in Cusco, Peru is one of the Seven World Wonders! The children explained through a short play how this ancient civilization was able to create an empire called the Inca Empire. They learned about countries around the world and their cultures. The legend of “Manco Capac y Mama Ocllo” explains how the Inca Empire and the City of Cuzco were founded. Second grade presented the legend of “Manco Capac y Mama Ocilo.” In their last reading unit second grade learned about Folk Tales. They wore colorful and beautiful skirts, hats and bandanas to dance to the song “Esta Vida,” a song of the famous Colombian artist “Jorge Celedon” who inspires people to be thankful for all the wonderful things we have in life. The Splash First Graders shared with the Shiloh community one of the most typical dances from Colombia called Cumbia. Sharing the languages and traditions worldwide made it possible for our dancers to feel the music as they moved to the sound of “Sopa de Caracol.” Students included relevant facts about this country using illustrations to demonstrate cultural backgrounds. Polache is a national singer and author of many songs based on the daily lives of Catrachos, a popular name given to people from Honduras. Our kindergarten classroom traveled to Honduras learning about and exploring its traditional music, and Punta dancing to the rhythm of Polache. Each class prepared a presentation for the school, and students and families were able to watch this presentation, titled “Se Habla Español.” We have four Spanish immersion classes here at Shiloh.
